About The Chant

The Chant is a single-player, third-person survival horror action-adventure game set on a remote spiritual island retreat. Players must craft, fight, and escape the psychedelic horrors unleashed when a ritual goes wrong, awakening a dimension of cosmic terror. It was developed by Brass Token and published by Prime Matter and has 78.45% positive reviews on Steam and 6.5 ratings on IGN with more than 29,370 units sold.

As the UI Artist, I was responsible for designing user interface elements that enhanced the game's immersive horror experience, ensuring seamless integration with the game's aesthetic.

In-Game Lore Development

Created detailed illustrations (using Illustrator, Photoshop, and Procreate) and accompanying notes for the game's bestiary, enriching the narrative by providing insights into various creatures' characteristics and behaviours.

other things I did

Motion Capture

Participated in motion capture sessions for the main character, contributing to the development of lifelike movements and interactions within the game environment.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Worked closely with Environment Artists, Game Designers, Producers, Art Directors, and Engineering teams to seamlessly integrate visual elements into the overall game experience.

What I learned

Joining Brass Token as a UI artist was almost like a leap into the unknown. I went in without a formal background in the gaming industry, but I was eager to learn. Through close collaboration with developers, 3D artists, and the art director, I quickly adapted to a new creative environment and workflow.

Using tools like Unreal Engine, Photoshop, and Illustrator, I contributed to the in-game HUD, menus, and iconography. I learned how game UI isn’t just about visuals, it’s about communicating gameplay clearly while staying true to the world’s tone.

What surprised me most? I ended up loving it. The fast iteration, team energy, and challenge of building immersive, player-focused design opened my eyes to how UI shapes storytelling in games.
